Feb 7 2015 - WESTBAY AUTO OPEN and TOM MYERS SR. MEMORIAL

Dear KSBO Bowlers,

The second half of our forty-second season is officially under way. Fifty-eight bowlers showed up to Hi-Joy Bowl on February 7th for the WESTBAY AUTO OPEN and TOM MYERS SR. MEMORIAL 205 and under.

Prior to the start of the tournament D.J. Hoem presented the Tom Myers Inspirational Award to Vern Elkhart. Based on recommendations and a vote by the bowlers the board of directors narrowed the field to three worthy candidates that the bowlers voted on at last year’s final tournament. They were Mike VanWinkle, Don York and eventual winner Vern Elkhart. We will be voting again this year so for the remainder of the season if you see a bowler that you would like the board to consider for this award please let us know.

This tournament was the tournament that we opened up to all USBC members. Even though this is not the first year we have invited everyone to come join us this is the first year we have opened it up to junior bowlers. The leader in the open division after the qualifying round was Tyler Boe, a junior bowler. So history has been made. Tyler shot games of 202-201-194-215-279 for 1091. Low to qualify and cash was 934.

After the three games of semi-finals Tyler continued to lead. He shot games of 212-247-190 winning all of them. This gave him a grand total of 1830. Behind him was Austin Gratzer 1706 (90), Daniel Hanson 1666 (60), Dean Richards 1663 (30), and in fifth Ryan Council 1608 (60).

The first game of the TV finals Dean defeated Ryan 221-213. Daniel then beat Ryan 247-220. After that he defeated Austin 208-153 and Tyler 236-212. Congratulations Daniel for again making history in becoming the first junior bowler to win a KSBO tournament. Instead of prize money, any junior bowler that places in the KSBO will earn scholarship money. A check for the amount of their prize money will be sent to the SMART scholarship fund in their name to help further their education.

In the 205 and under division Preston Carson was the leader after the qualifying round. He shot games of 169-195-225-157-159 for 905. Low to qualify and cash was 807.

Craig Wilkey moved into the lead after the three games of semi-finals. He shot games of 187-191-225 winning two of them. This added to his qualifying gave him a 1537 total. Behind him was Preston Carson 1527 (30), Larry Dodd 1513 (90), Brandon VanWinkle 1411 (30), and in fifth Aaron Kielbasa 1370 (60).

The first match of the TV finals Aaron defeated Brandon 218-154. Larry then beat Aaron 179-146. That is all he needed as he defeated Preston 215-177 and Craig 187-178 to earn the under title. Congratulations Larry.

The high game out of the money was a three way tie in the open division with a 232. Mike VanWinkle, Nate Hipp, and Ryan Showalter each receive $47 (prize portion of entry fee per USBC) off of their next singles entry. The high game out of the money in the under division was a 203 by Andrew Kashuba. He receives a free entry into his next singles tournament.

The KSBO would like to thank Ken Price from Westbay Auto for sponsoring this tournament for the twenty-second time. We look forward to having them back again next season.

The KSBO would also like to thank Jim Monahan from Hi-Joy for again sponsoring the Tom Myers Sr. Memorial. It is the eleventh time that we have honored Tom Sr. with this tournament. We look forward to honoring him again next season. We would also like to thank D.J. Hoem for being there to present the award.

Our next tournament is our third trip (last one until the finals) to Laurel Lanes on February 21st. See below for those bowlers who need this tournament. The open division will be sponsored by LAKESIDE INDUSTRIES and the 205 and under is sponsored by SEVEN CEDARS CASINO. Check in begins at 9:30 with the tournament starting at 11 AM. The format for this event is a little different as the field is cut in half after the five games of qualifying. They then bowl two games. The field is then cut in half again. This is done until we get to the TV finals. The price is the same as a singles tournament, $75 for open members and $60 for under members. If you know someone that hasn’t bowled a KSBO and would like to try one this is a great one to try because you only have to beat half the field to move on to the next round.
