George R. Shafer, 59, of Silverdale died Oct. 31, 2002, of cancer in Bremerton.

He was born Aug. 24, 1943, in Wisconsin to George and Edna (Trapp) Shafer. He graduated from West High School in Bremerton in 1961 and
joined the Army in August 1961.

Mr. Shafer served with the Army's Fifth Special Forces from 1961 until his retirement as a sergeant major in 1985. He was a veteran of five tours of duty in Vietnam and service in Europe and the eastern United States. He was awarded numerous medals and honors, including five
Purple Hearts and six Bronze Stars.

After his retirement, he returned to Bremerton in 1985. For the past 10 years, he worked at All Star Lanes in Silverdale.

Mr. Shafer was a prize-winning bowler. He won a special ring for scoring a perfect 300.

He also enjoyed baseball and working with Special Olympics. He was a member of Evergreen Lutheran Church in Seabeck.

Survivors included his mother, now of Silverdale; his father, now of Michigan; two sisters, Betty Kudera and her husband, Mike, of Silverdale, and Judy Benson and her husband, Paul, of Bremerton; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
